Add Decorative Wall Panels to Your Fall Home Improvement Checklist
Temperatures are dropping, leaves are changing, and sweaters are making their way back into our wardrobe rotation - fall is here! With cooler weather forcing us back inside, it’s the perfect time to take on a home improvement project before Jack Frost comes knocking at our doors. Installing decorative wall panels is a relatively quick and easy way to take your space to the next level. These materials add welcome texture and dimension, boosting the visual interest of any room. Walston Architectural Products' handcrafted wood paneling for walls is available in multiple styles, so you can find a solution that suits your needs and personal tastes. When you visit our showroom in Kansas City, we’ll walk you through our options and help you conceptualize the feature wall of your dreams. Let’s take a closer look at our wall panel selection and how you can boost your home’s aesthetic appeal this season.
How Our Wall Panels Are Made
All of our wood paneling for walls is made-to-order by our in-house craftsmen. We hold ourselves to a higher standard and construct our designs with style, durability, and integrity in mind, so you can enjoy them now and years down the road. Each of our panels includes machine-grade medium-density fiberboard, which is stronger and longer lasting than the MDF you’ll find at a nearby hardware store. Because MDF is an engineered wood product, it doesn’t feature the grain and knots you see on natural wood, allowing for paint to glide on smoothly and evenly. On top of that, MDF doesn’t dry out, making it resistant to warping and an excellent choice for wall panels. In addition to our unfinished and primed MDF products, we offer unfinished white oak and birch wood paneling. These options are still backed with MDF for stability, but are the perfect solution for homeowners looking to bring the beauty of the outside world inside. Keep in mind that if you opt for the white oak or birch, you may see some variations in the wood grain and color due to natural wood characteristics.
Reeded, Fluted, and Slatted Wall Panels
Our decorative wall panels can be ordered reeded, fluted, or slatted depending on your preferences. But what exactly is the difference between these designs? And more importantly, which one is right for you? Here’s what you should know about these styles of wood paneling for walls:
Reeded Wall Panels: Available in 3/4-inch or 1-1/2-inch designs, these panels feature classic convex reeds that complement both traditional and modern aesthetics.
Fluted Wall Panels: Our fluted wall panels curve inward and add charming sophistication to your space. You can shop this style in 1-inch, 2-inch, or 3-inch options.
Slatted Wall Panels: These panels are built with 1-inch vertical slats. Although they have a sleek, modern look, their simple design effortlessly blends with any décor.
Measuring for Wood Paneling
Once you find a style that strikes a chord with you, you need to figure out the amount of wall panels your project requires. This can be broken down into four easy steps:
Determine the length of each wall you’ll be installing wood paneling on by measuring left to right in feet.
Measure the height of each wall in feet, but exclude your baseboard trim.
You can deduct windows and doors from your calculation or leave them in to give yourself more material in case you run into cutting or installation mishaps.
Place your wall panel order. Our 12-inch by 94-inch panels come in boxes of four and can be easily cut down to any size, whether you want to cover full walls, ceilings, or even a kitchen island.
If you don’t feel comfortable measuring on your own, that’s OK! We offer local on-site measurement consultations for an additional fee if you’re local to the Kansas City area. You can also email us photos of your space, and we’ll be happy to assist virtually at no extra charge.
