Incorporating Reeded, Fluted, and Slatted Barn Doors into Your Interior Design Scheme

There are a myriad of things that you can do with barn doors when considering all the staining, design, hardware, and wood species options. That's a big part of the reason why we very rarely ever manufacture the same custom barn door twice. As the leading barn door company in Kansas City, we want the final product to be as unique as the home or office it's being incorporated into.

One of the ways that we go about making our barn doors distinct is by giving them texture. There are three main texturized styles of barn door that we carry: fluted, reeded, and slatted. Some of these design patterns go all the way back to ancient Greece and can be seen in the many columns in their architecture. Let’s break down what each one of them looks like and how to incorporate these barn door styles in your own interior design scheme.

    Fluted Custom Barn Doors

A fluted barn door showcases a ribbed effect via the vertical rounded curved grooves that span the entirety of the door. The design is best illustrated in our painted fluted door, which currently starts at just $540.

Beyond the attractive price point, another thing that Walston Architectural Products customers love about this door is that the vertical concave grooves give it more grip. That may come in handy for children who can’t necessarily reach the door handle. It’s also worth noting that this door design can be bought as a barn door, pocket door, or hinge door.

    Reeded Custom Barn Doors

Think of a reeded barn door as the opposite of a fluted barn door. Instead of rounded grooves, the door features a vertical piped pattern that is convex. This gives the door a rippling effect which is just as attractive to the eye as it is to the touch.

This design is best illustrated in our painted reeded door, which also starts at $540, just like our painted fluted door. Although you don’t get the extra grip factor like you do with the fluted door, many customers agree that reeded custom barn doors feature a superior texture element.

    Slatted Custom Barn Doors

Slatted barn doors feature no curvature in the wood or grooves/spaces in the door. Although they lack texture, they more than make up for it with their clean lines and crisp edges.

Our painted modern slat door design is great for rooms that already have a lot of texture going on in the adjacent elements and you don’t want things to look “too busy.” Like the previous two doors we mentioned, this one also starts at $540.

Things to Keep in Mind When Selecting Custom Barn Doors

If you have neutral walls with no pattern, then you should be able to incorporate virtually any custom barn door design that you want. However, if you do have textured walls or patterns via a wallpaper, then you need to be a little bit more careful about your selection. Putting one pattern against another has the potential to create a clashing effect. For instance, you wouldn't want to incorporate a barn door design with vertical lines against a wallpaper pattern with horizontal lines.

Additionally, keep in mind that you'll have a ton of customization options to choose from with your barn door. Some of the main ones include door width, door height, wood species, wood finish, and hardware style, just to name a few.

Getting Started on Your Texturized Custom Barn Door Design

Now that you know what to expect with fluted, reeded, and slatted barn doors, the next step is to pick one out of your very own. Incorporating any of these into your interior design scheme should be easy so long as you don't have any conflicting design elements adjacent to your doorway.
